What Are Percussion Devices?
Percussion Massage Devices, such as the Theragun or Hypervolt, are gaining popularity in recent years. They are not necessarily a new treatment, but more an upgraded packaging and convenient way for patients to administer self-massage. For example, if you want to provide massage to your quads, you would typically either use your hands, a foam roller, or even a rolling pin type device (The Stick). The popularity of the percussion massage device (massage gun) is an easy way to deliver an intense massage to many areas.
How Do Percussion Devices Help?
This is a great option for some patients but certainly has its limitations.
For example, depending on the location of your problem you may not be able to reach it yourself. Also, patients sometimes struggle with appropriate dosage, intensity, and frequency. If this were a “magic gun” that fixed all musculoskeletal aches and pains, then the world would be a happier place! This is not the case, and although percussion massage devices are sometimes included in a comprehensive physical therapy plan of care; they are likely not going to “fix” anything on their own.How Do We Use Percussion Devices?
In addition to utilizing these devices within the practice at K2PT; we are also happy to help you figure out which device you should buy for your home and/or show you how to use it. There are many benefits to these tools, but could also be counterproductive when used incorrectly. Please ask your physical therapist for their opinion on if percussion massage treatments are indicated for you in session or in your home.
