What Is The McKenzie Method?
The McKenzie Method is an internationally used system of classification and treatment of spinal and extremity musculoskeletal disorders. Very often applied to treatment of back and neck pain thought to be caused from disc issues. Robin McKenzie is a physiotherapist from Australia, born in 1931, who is one of the most recognized names in the physical therapy world. His system and his books has helped countless patients over the decades, all across the world.
How To Use The McKenzie Method?
Use of the principles of the McKenzie Method is simply a “tool in our toolbox”
This means it is not indicated for every patient, but may be helpful to some people. You will often hear us at K2PT say, “we aim to prescribe the RIGHT treatment, to the RIGHT person, at the RIGHT time.” What that means is that after a thorough evaluation and assessment, your physical therapist will determine if you are a candidate for treatment using some of the McKenzie principles, or possibly even in conjunction with a more comprehensive approach to your pain and disabilities. What Are The Benefits?
McKenzie Method or Williams Flexion. It is not uncommon for our patients to come in and “show” us that they have been performing the cobra pose, because their mailman (nothing against the mail carriers – we love our mail carrier) told them it was the McKenzie move. This is probably like 5% of the overall program – and – it may be the exact opposite movement of what you need to do. There is an opposite movement (also very oversimplified), which involves laying on your back and pulling your knees into your chest. Please come in and get evaluated by a licensed Physical Therapist to determine what is correct for you!
