What is Vertigo?
“Vertigo” is thrown around as a diagnosis, when often it is just a symptom. Vertigo is the sensation of feeling off balance, or like you or your environment is spinning. This symptom can be causes by a number of different things and often times a patient is referred to physical therapy for treatment. Some ENT physicians will treat vertigo symptoms in their office, while some others will refer to physical therapy. Often patients with longstanding dizziness will be referred to physical therapy for treatment, performed in a safe environment.
There is a condition called Benign Paroxysmal Position Vertigo (BPPV) – and this is what most people mean when the refer to “vertigo”. It is caused by a problem with the nerves and structures of your inner ear canals. It causes brief bouts of mild to intense dizziness, often with positional chages of your head and neck. This is often treated very successfully by physical therapy, performing specific movements in the office, as well as teaching home management strategies.
