What is Pre and Post-Surgical Care?
rthopedic surgeries are very common in the 21st century. The training of the surgeon and the technological advances in medicine now allow for remarkable benefits for patients. There are many surgeries that are performed minimally invasively, or even arthroscopically. There are also still many procedures that require an open incision depending on the work that needs to be done. At K2PT we have experience both pre- and post-operatively with any procedure you can think of. The most common types of orthopedic conditions we see in the clinic are joint replacements, spine surgery, fracture repair, sports surgeries, and muscle/tendon surgeries. Some surgeries are from trauma, some are from general “wear-and-tear.”
How Do We Help With Pre and Post-Surgical Care?
There are many instances which require pre-operative physical therapy. Most commonly, a person who is very deconditioned or stiff, that will be undergoing a total joint replacement may attend a few session of physical therapy prior to their procedure to build some strength or regain some range of motion. The stronger and more flexible you are going into your procedure may help ensure a better outcome.
Why is Pre and Post Surgical Care Important
Post-surgical physical therapy is critical. Each procedure has established protocols and guidelines for progression based on scientific and biological markers of tissue healing; your physical therapist is an expert at progressing and restoring your function safely. Each surgeon may also specify different guidelines and protocols, which your physical therapist will defer to if specified. At K2PT we communicate with your surgeon on an ongoing basis to ensure you are progressed safely and as timely as possible.
